Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-Syogun brings a poised, blue-leaning gray that recalls the quiet rigor of a winter sky. This 50ml fountain pen ink balances subtle shading with steady legibility, lending notes, annotations, and longer journal entries a calm, refined tone.
Color & Inspiration
Named Fuyu-Syogun, or "Rigor of Winter," this gray sits cool on the page with a soft blue cast. Its understated character reads cleanly on both bright white and warm cream papers, showing gentle depth without overpowering your writing.
Writing Experience
The water-based dye formula offers smooth, consistent flow and reliable starts in everyday use. Expect controlled shading that adds texture without excessive contrast, working well from fine nibs through broader, expressive grinds on most quality papers.
Presentation
The Iroshizuku glass bottle is both functional and display-worthy, featuring a concave base that helps with the final fills when ink runs low. Thoughtful design meets practical utility, making refills neat and straightforward.

Pilot Iroshizuku Inks, have a nice palette... and this is no different.
For my grays, so far I have narrowed down to Diamine Ghost, Herbin Gris Nuage and this one. I can't decide which of the three I like more.
Firstly, I love gray inks. I do have a bottle of Pilot Kiri-same, as well as Noodler's Lexington Gray. With my Vanishing Point having an EF nib, I typically run the Noodler's in it; the darker shades showing better than lighter on the EF. The Fuyu-Syogun seems ever so slightly darker than the Noodler's, and I love how it runs in the Vanishing Point.
It's great having the Truphae store in the neighborhood; I was able to walk to the store from my office and try the ink that afternoon!
Beautiful color. Truphae has the best ink samples system and variety available online.
This is a medium gray that does not bleed through your paper or feather. It is a well behaved ink, exactly what I expect from an Iroshizuku ink.
Iroshizuku inks are the total package. Nice and wet without being watery, easy to clean, shade surprisingly well while still being saturated, come in a pretty and functional bottle. They come in a great selection of colors and this gray is a fun one. It has the warmth of purple-ish blue undertones. I enjoy it.
