The Sailor Hard Maple Fountain Pen in Vermillion brings the texture of wood to the familiar proportions of a full-size Japanese fountain pen. Its subdued reddish-orange finish allows the maple grain to remain part of the design, while a large 21k gold nib gives the pen a writing character distinct from Sailor's smaller resin models. The result is a material-focused pen intended to be handled and used as well as admired.
The cap and barrel are made from hard maple treated with Sailor's Wood Plastic Combination process. Plastic particles penetrate the wood, and a specialized coloring method produces the Vermillion shade. A frosted finish preserves the visual texture of the grain and gives the surface a softer appearance than highly polished resin.
Sailor describes the color as a restrained reddish orange, drawing a connection with the warm finishes often associated with fine musical instruments. Gold-toned appointments complement that warmth, while the brass grip section receives gold ion plating. Individual wood grain is part of the material's appeal, so the pattern need not be identical from one example to another.
This example has a large 21k gold Medium-Fine nib. Positioned between Sailor's Fine and Medium grades, Medium-Fine suits detailed notes, correspondence, and handwriting that benefits from a controlled line. Sailor nibs are appreciated for their distinctive tactile feedback; the writing experience also depends on the chosen ink, paper, and writing pressure.
The pen fills with a Sailor proprietary cartridge or a compatible Sailor converter for bottled fountain pen ink. Its full-size body and metal grip give it a different presence from the lighter Professional Gear Slim, while the screw-cap provides a secure closure between writing sessions.
The Hard Maple collection offers an alternative to Sailor's better-known resin finishes, placing natural grain and carefully controlled color at the center of the design. The Vermillion version is particularly distinctive for its balance of warm wood, restrained color, and gold detailing. This new example offers the opportunity to experience that combination with Sailor's large gold nib.

Free Shipping: We offer free shipping for all U.S. orders over $20, including Alaska and Hawaii.
Standard Shipping Fee: For U.S. orders below $20, a flat shipping fee of $5.99 will be applied.
